History Of Cocoa Beach
The beautiful coastal city of Cocoa Beach is known for its colorful and diverse history. The first settlers to the area were the Native Americans who lived within the Eastern coastal region of Florida. Once the Spanish arrived in the New World, the native population dwindled and the coastal region lay deserted until the 1800s.
Following the civil War, many freed slaves funneled into the area and tamed the lands of the wild Central Florida region. In 1888, a group of prominent men purchased the entire Cocoa Beach area for use in a later development.

By the 1920s, the development of Cocoa Beach was underway, thanks to a local attorney named Gus Edwards. Today, Gus C. Edwards is cited as being the founder of the modern city. On June 5, 1925, the town of Cocoa Beach was officially established thanks in large part to the efforts of Edwards, who envisioned the area to be the site of a future resort town.
By 1920, construction hand begun on a bridge to the town of Cocoa Beach. Opening up access to the beach allowed many new residents and tourists to make their way into the region. By the mid-1940s the town was a dynamic and growing residential area, thanks in large part to the nearby missile test facility at Cape Canaveral.
